Ricky Gervais for Netflix – a lesson in advertising without bulls**t

Your opinion on Ricky Gervais will very much dictate what you make of his latest, unashamedly careless, revelling in his own unprofessionalism plug for Netflix, or more his own accomplishments.

Personally, I’m a fan of Ricky; his annoying inhaled laugh, crooked smile and animal rights campaigning. I’m also a fan of unorthodox advertising where it’s not all brand brand, brand, but more humorous and sharable. At Velvet we’re constantly surrounded by and have to sift through a lot of what we call ‘brand bulls**t’, which we know journalists prefer to avoid. But watching these 5 clips promoting the Australian telecoms company bringing Netflix to Australia, it was great to see how little of it there was.

We’re all highly tuned bulls**t detectors nowadays and the more brands like Netflix can embrace this the better. Honesty and humour speak volumes for any brand, as any successfully shameless comedian like Ricky Gervais will tell you.
